Scott graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree with distinction in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nebraska. He was a member and officer of the local chapters of the engineering honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Tau.
Scott received his JD degree from the Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California. Scott was a quarter-finalist in the Hale Honors Moot Court competition and served as an Editor of the competition the following year. Scott is also the co-author of an article in the Southern California Law Review and served as an extern to the Honorable Malcolm Lucas at the Central District of California District.
Before retiring from the active practice of law in January of 2023, Scott practiced as a trial and transactional partner in the Intellectual Property Group at Sheppard Mullin in Los Angeles. Scott has deep expertise in litigation, litigation avoidance and IP transactions. He also handled business litigation and disputes involving sophisticated contract issues. Scott was lead counsel in 100's of cases involving patent and/or trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation, false advertising, unfair competition and business disputes. Scott also served as lead IP lawyer on hundreds of M & A transactions. Scott used his litigation experience to work with clients on agreements where IP was expected to be developed or exploited (such as joint development, licenses and other types of joint exploitation agreements) to minimize disputes and facilitate successful collaborations.
Scott is a Martindale Hubbell AV® Preeminent™Peer Review Rated Attorney, was recognized by Best Lawyers in America as the Los Angeles Lawyer of the Year for Patent Litigation in 2020, and has multiple years of recognition by Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers. Scott has also been recognized for his pro bono work by the Southern California ACLU.
Scott is a current member of the ABA Intellectual Property Litigation Committee, Patent Litigation Committee and the Trademark Litigation Committee. He is also a past vice-chair of the IPO Damages Committee, and past member of the INTA Enforcement and Non-Traditional Trademark Committees.
